netTrekker Village

I just got an email about a new Beta site for Gizmoz. It was a fun way to introduce a video. Here's my example: http://www.nettrekkervillage.com/video/gizmoz-and-a-video (it's embedded on our Video page). It's not the best, but I quickly grabbed a video from YouTube (need to try it once more to see if it'll work with our embed codes) and went for it. I thought the dog was a nice touch since dogs are in our top searches.

What other fun sites do you use? How do you use them with netTrekker d.i.?

I learned about Wordle recently while observing an elementary student using it to enter words that describe her school. I shared the site http://www.wordle.net/ with my 1st grader's teacher who will be using it with her students as they finish their nearly year-long unit on insects (fostered from 3 praying mantis' they've had all yr). She'll ask the students to list words that describe insects (they know all about abdomen, thorax, head), types of insects, etc. The really cool part is that the Randomizer changes the color, text direction, font, and other things. You can also manually change the settings.

Unfortunately, the Wordle website indicates that it may be inappropriate for classroom use due to no filtering of inappropriate words.

I used Wordle this year to design a classroom poster for high school students. I had each student use 15 words (one had to be their name) to describe themselves and then we printed them in color. I made a collage of the Wordles and laminated them to a poster and posted in our classroom. Now the students can see a reminder of words that describe them.

I took a brief look and may use it in my presentation at NECC. Another fun site is Blabberize - http://blabberize.com/. It is used with still images.

Can I mention my own site as a fun educational site: SpellingCity.com ? We really appreciate feedback from teachers and schools.

I have Spelling City listed in my blog as a language arts resource for parents and teachers. It's a WONDERFUL site. When doing teacher trainings, I often get either "thanks!" or "I know. I use it!". Always positive responses. Thank you! Great site!

Hi Everyone! I would like to share this site that I learned about yesterday in a UBD workshop! I found the site to be inspirational and motivating for learners: www.thisibelieve.org. Here is a little about it:
This I Believe is an international project engaging people in writing and sharing essays describing the core values that guide their daily lives. Over 70,000 of these essays, written by people from all walks of life, are archived here on our website, heard on public radio, chronicled through our books and television programming, and featured in weekly podcasts.
